What is the internet? The internet in a simple term is a group of millions of computers and devises that are connected and communicated to each other using a technology called networking.

Those computers and devices are using different Medias to communicate between each other; hence they are using telephone lines, coaxial cables, fiber optic lines, wireless connections and satellites.

How many ways to connect to the internet?

There are common ways to be connected to the internet:

• ISP (Internet Service Provider) via modem.
• Cable Internet.
• ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line).
• Using a mobile phone SIM card.

What are the benefits of the internet?

There are unlimited benefits you are having by using the internet such as but not limited to:

• Surfing the web seeking information.
• Online shopping.
• Send and Receive emails.
• Text and Voice chat with friends and famil.
• Watch videos, TV channels live broadcasts.
• Download music, songs, photos …etc.
• Playing online games with other people.
• Download software and applications.
• Updating devices firmware such as satellite receiver using the internet.
• And many other unlimited benefits..

How does internet work?

The answer to this question cannot be answered in a simplified way like the first question “What is the internet?”, but I will do my best to simplify it. I will start my example from your computer regardless of how did you get the internet, so your computer is connected to an ISP (Internet Service Provider) via one of the methods mentioned above, your ISP is providing you the Internet service just like many others like you and at the same time the ISP is connected to their ISP or connected directly to the internet cloud.

The Cloud basically is just like a black box, a huge network that the entire global internet is connected to. Stuff goes in, stuff comes out..

To go more into details to understand what is the internet, the global internet network is so huge, it contains huge number of hardware devices such as Routers, Servers, Modems, Satellites, Microwave links and many others, those hardware devices are programmed and configured using certain protocols to help provide the internet services through the networks they are making.

How to use the internet?

You can use an Internet browser software such as Internet Explorer (which comes with Microsoft Windows), Safari Explorer (comes with apple Macintosh), Mozilla Firefox explorer, Google Chrome explorer and many other internet exploring tools you may download for FREE from the internet in case you are using PC or Laptop. If you are using a mobile phone or tablets to use the internet you may use their own internet explorer application.

How safe is the Internet?

To complete the answer for what is the internet we have to talk about security, the internet is not always safe, there are always threats everybody is usually trying to avoid, threats like computer viruses, hackers, porn websites, untrusted websites … etc. So to be safe you need to have the below general tips in concederation:

• A good Antivirus program and firewall installed on your PC and always updated.

Internet speed test

Internet speed has always been an obsession for Internet users, there are couple of factors behind slow internet connection speed, the first one is from the ISP (Internet Service Provider) side and the second one is your side, I will show you how to perform your internet speed test.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

First of all, if your slow internet speed connection caused by your ISP, then you can’t do anything about it rather than asking your Internet service provider to upgrade your account.

 

Note: Any kind of software claim to increase your internet speed is a gimmick.

 

To identify what is the speed of your internet connection you can use an internet speed test websites, one of the best and more realistic internet speed test websites is speedtest.net, when you first open their website your ISP will be detected automatically and will assign testing  channels automatically according to your location as shown in the below image.

 

Note: Any internet speed test website you may use including the one below should give a general idea of the kind of bandwidth you have available.

 

After clicking on Begin Test button you will be taken through the testing process as the website will download a special file to your computer to check your download speed, and then it will upload it back to check your uploading speed with a very nice real time speed meter, the result will be shown later after few seconds as shown below.

Issues caused by your side as a consumer

There are other reasons that cause your internet speed to be slow, some of those may be referred to bad cookies, viruses, system bugs, low disk space, registry errors and other reasons that make your system to slow down which reflects directly or indirectly on the internet connection speed.

Another reasons might cause slow internet speed related to your modem or the number of devices you are using at home whether they are PCs, laptops, smart mobile phones, tablets or any other device that needs to have an internet access.

Also if you are using Wi-Fi inside your home and sitting in a location where the signal is so weak, then the internet definitely will be slow and will take your device battery charge faster.

 

Note: Wireless router with three antennas is very good for more signal boosting to cover bigger areas.

 

Does cable connection better than wireless?

Yes, cables are much faster and stable than wireless connection specially for short distances cables, Ethernet cables can be used in a distance up to 90 meters, if you are planning to use cables instead of wireless try to purchase good brands even if they are much expensive.

How to eliminate all possible reasons that caused my slow internet speed?

There are many tips and tricks you can use to make sure you are consuming the most out of your ISP internet bandwidth by applying the points mentioned in the “Points to increase my internet speed” and after that come back and perform the internet speed test to see the difference.

Slow Internet

If you are experiencing slow internet speed at your home or office, try to investigate whether only you at home or office having that problem in order to eliminate the possibilities, then go further for more detailed investigations, in general you may first try to restart your modem, then check your computer for any related issues (I will show you below in details) that might cause the problem. 

Tips for eliminating every single possible reason for slow internet?

If you are asking yourself “why is my internet connection so slow?”, then you may use the below tricks to answer your question.

Follow the below tips and then run an internet speed test to see the difference:

Old Modem: Check your router/modem if it is old this might cause a slow internet speed.

Modem/Router Restart: Try to restart your modem/router by turning it off and on if you felt your internet got slower, this is a common troubleshooting.

Wi-Fi Hacking: Be sure that no one is hacking your Wi-Fi signal and using your own internet without your consent, put a very good password and use an encryption method to increase the security (you may do that by following the router’s manufacture manual).

Dust Clean your routers, modems, PCs .. etc using an air compressor to increase ventilation and reduce heat in the said devices.

Cables Connectivity: check all your cables connectors and connections from any loose contact.

Change your Wi-Fi Channel: Try changing your Wi-Fi channel in your wireless router, if a lot of people of your neighbors using the same channel “many users use the default router settings” this may lead to signal confusion to the routers, so its better to change your channel to a different one and you can do that so easily by accessing your router using the information provided by its manufacturing manual.

 

Note: You can check to see what Wi-Fi channels your neighbors are using simply by a tool called inSSIDer.

Multiple Devices: check if you have some other devices at home that might connected to your internet such as tablets, smartphones, laptops ..etc and disconnect them from the internet as they’re causing slow internet connection obviously.

Cashe and Cookies Clearing: Clear all your internet explorer and other third parity explorer’s cache and cookies, learn how to do that visit How to manage cookies, cashe and temp files.

System Malicious Scanning: Scan and clean your system from any viruses, spywares, malware, adware or any other possible threats, those infections sometimes are the reason behind slow internet connection, To learn how do that visit How to clean my PC from viruses.

Registry Errors and Bugs: Sometimes registry errors or bad registry keys drive your connection to slow internet, download the CCleaner FREE  tool from below and perform registry and system errors scanning.

Clean Up your Hard Disk Drive: Clean up your computer HDD and free more space by deleting some unnecessary or temporary files, you can do that by one of the below ways:

• Manually Delete your files you don’t need any more and delete temp files by searching them in the search bar.
• Use Windows tools, go to any HDD partition icon inside My Computer > then right click on it > Properties > then Disk Cleanup button.
• Use a special tool like  CCleaner, you may download from above.

Bandwidth Dispersions: Look for any running programs that uses the internet in hidden mode, you may close them or uninstall them by going to the Control Panel window from the start menu > then Uninstall a program link, also you may remove any of them from the start up to prevent them from being opened again after every windows start by following the below:

DSL Filters: If you are using DSL internet connection, then check that you are using a good filter brand.

 

Note: DSL filter is a small box has one input and two outputs, to connect the landline cable to one side of the box, and take two cables from the other side one for the telephone and the other one of the internet service.

 

Modem/Router Upgrade: If you feel your router or modem is old then upgrade it to new one and try to select the one with the three antennas for better wireless transmission.

What is latest version of Windows?

Many people over the Internet are asking this question specially for those who are not using Microsoft Windows or not the fans of it, so the answer for the “What is latest version of Windows?” question is Windows 8.

Microsoft has released recently their Windows 8th version which grabbed all people attention because of its new style in terms of visual interface or technical programming unlike Microsoft previous windows versions, it offers the user two interface designs at the same time one for the tablets and the other one for desktops and laptops.

Installation of Microsoft Windows 8

Microsoft has put buying the latest version of Windows in several ways and at a very reasonable prices.

• Can be upgraded from previous windows versions such as Windows xp, Win Vista and Win 7 at a price of almost 40$ from a Windows 8 upgrading dedicated version only.
• Upgrading from Windows 7 after purchasing a laptop during June 2012 directly from Microsoft.com for only 15$.
• Installing fresh copy of Windows 8 by purchasing the complete Windows 8 version DVD from the market for only 70$

 

Note: Upgrading from previous windows versions to the latest version of windows is not always recommended as a third parity programs compatibility issues may raise up, But that doesn’t mean that upgrading to windows 8 will not make most of your programs and tools not to work properly as Microsoft designed Windows 8 to be compatible with Windows 7 programs.

 

The Installation process of Windows 8 is extremely easy as its initial steps are similar to those of Windows Vista or Windows 7, in addition to that Microsoft has simplified the process of choosing and selecting options, and the installation ends by selecting the windows 8 theme colors for each user you are defining.

Windows 8 hardware requirements

Any PC or laptop operates Windows Vista or Windows 7 is sufficient to operates Windows 8, and to be more detailed the minimum hardware requirements are below:

• CPU: 1 GHz or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
• RAM: 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
• HD space: 16 GB for (32-bit) or 20 GB for (64-bit)
• Graphics card: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Brand new Windows 8 Interface design overview

When Windows 8 starts and you log into it, the first thing you will see is the new Metro interface, the Metro interface is designed to put all the high priority applications in the form of blocks in different sizes and colors which you may modify both, this interface is so useful and easy to use specially if you have a touch monitor (which is basically designed for) or even if you are using a normal mouse, you may add any application you use normally into the metro space.

Also, the old desktop interface is still there in case if you feel more comfortable using it by waving away the metro interface and you will find yourself as you are using Windows 7 desktop again within the latest version of windows.

One of the advantages of the new design is Charm bar you can find when you move the mouse in the upper right corner or the lower one of the screen, it provides you everything you need, it also gives you the ability to access the device setting and other applications in addition to share content in the social networks and view alerts and read the time and lots of other features.

Another easy way to see what applications are currently opened is located on the left side bar when you move the mouse pointer in the upper left corner of the screen you can see them there and directly can be accessible.

Another new feature the metro interface is offering are the applications alerts or updates, such as twitter or any other applications, and you can set for how many alerts to show up to 7 alerts.

Windows 8 built-in applications

The latest version of windows offer some additional useful apps that an average user may use on daily basis, some of those applications are listed below:

• Email application: A simple email application for your email usage.
  
• People application: This application will grab all your information from Google, Microsoft, twitter, facebook and Linkdin.
  
• Messenger application: Provides you the ability to connect and use your facebook and Microsoft.
  
• New Internet explorer: Internet explorer version 10, the best explorer programmed by Microsoft by far.
  
• Calendar application: With a simple interface you can connect and use some third parity accounts such as Google account.
  
• Reader application: Use this application to read your PDF format files.

• Bing Maps application: Using this app you can view Bing Maps with some awesome features like viewing the traffic maps and the navigation as well.

• Pictures application: to view your photos stored locally, on facebook or from your Sky drive account remotely.
  

New Microsoft Windows 8 Store

One of the most useful services Microsoft has produced with the release of Microsoft Windows 8 is the Store application.

The store app provides you the flexibility to download for free and/or purchase any application or game directly from the new Microsoft Store (just like apple store) and with a simple click, and also gives you the ability to set an option of updating the downloaded apps directly and automatically without worrying about the new releases.

The Store app show you all needed details regarding the applications you are willing to download such as information about the apps, size of the desired app, and to get further information for how this application will act in your operating system in terms of technical.

Conclusion regarding the latest version of Windows

Microsoft Windows 8 is the best release by far in terms of design, flexibility, features, compatibility, technicality ….etc, at first you may find it difficult to use the new metro interface but over time in a matter of days you will master it and love it, even you will stop using the old fashion desktop interface as the new one is more flexible.

There might be some minor defects in Windows 8 but as usual we will see improvements in every system update.

Emirates Palace Hotel photography

Yesterday as I stayed in Abu Dhabi for a while I went to Emirates Palace Hotel which is owned by Abu Dhabi government, and cost around 3 Billion dollars to be build.

The Emirates Palace Hotel where furnished in gold and marble, with a large dome picked out in gold.

First time I went there the security did not allow me to enter inside of it because I was wearing a short trouser, they said it is their policy that only the people who books for a room inside the Hotel may have this authority unlike the visitors !!! I was shocked for such a role but I respected and I came again yesterday with a tall trouser and got accessed in.

The first day I went there I took only some photography from outside, but yesterday I took lots of cool images inside of the Palace and today I am sharing some of them with you hope you like it guys..

By the way, on the 2nd of December 2012 was the UAE National Union day and celebrations were everywhere inside the UAE, the Emirates flag was showing everywhere, in my photographs below you will find the Emirates flag because of those celebrations..

I don’t want to make it long for you I will simply leave you to see some of my photographs at the Emirates Palace.

What are Keyloggers?

Keyloggers are also known as Keystroke loggers, are type of software or Hardware that basically designed to track and record the keys struck on a keyboard in a covert manner so the user whose using that keyboard is unaware that his/her actions being monitored.

Reasons behind using Keyloggers?

There are mainly two reasons behind using Keyloggers:

• The first one (which has the most percentage of usage) is used by hackers.
• The second one is used by some kind of studies of human to computer interactions.

The most likely Keyloggers being used is by hackers whom they find very useful to gather user interactions and personal information from local or remote computers.

How do Keyloggers work?

The keyloggers basically record every single keys struck a user is performing while using his/her computer, and also may capture snapshots from the whole screen from time to time as per the configurations set by the hacker before or after the injection of an infected file or after the installation of the keyloggers software onto your Windows.

They may also form as Hardware as a small piece of a connecter that attached between the keyboard’s terminal and the computer as shown in the below image.

When someone uses the keyboard of his computer, the keylogger starts recording every single keystroke he/she presses,  and saves all the records in a log file, this log file will be sent to the hacker’s email (as configured by the hacker) along with screen snapshots in case if it was configured as well.

How to be safe from Keyloggers?

You may try to follow the below three advices to secure yourselves from being victims of keyloggers:

• Always remember when entering personal information such as user names, passwords, bank info … etc, use the Windows based On Screen Keyboard (OSK) which adds more security to your personal info by adding some kind of encryption but still its not a solution 100%.

 

Note: OSK can be found in any Microsoft Windows simply by following the below:

Click on Start menu > Type osk in the Start Search > Then hit Enter.

 

 

• Try not to use Internet cafés as much as possible, and when using one try to select the most famous and liable café, and in case of using that internet café try to check the back of the computer from any Hardware keylogger attached and also an active antivirus is running.
• (This point is the real protection) For your computer, always use an updated antivirus + use a special anti-keylogger (we recommend Zemana AntiLogger) software to clean your PC from any threats.

How to know if my computer infected by keyloggers?

Having an updated antivirus is not enough to protect your computer from keyloggers, many of the keyloggers are not recognized by antivirus programs as harmful software because under some circumstances keyloggers can be considered a legitimate piece of software, so it’s better to have dedicated Anti keyloggers software installed and updated alternatively with the antivirus, and to understand how Anti keyloggers work, typically they compare all files in your computer against a database of keyloggers looking for similarities which might signal the presence of a hidden keylogger.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Just yesterday I was with my family at Abu Dhabi, we enjoyed our time a lot specially when we decided to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which is considered I guess as one of the worlds largest mosque and has the largest carpet in the world…

The journey was wonderful, we found there lots of foreign people visiting the mosque inside and outside taking pictures for each other…

I prepared my Canon 550D and took all the stuff willing to have the chance to shoot some amazing photographs inside and outside the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

We arrived late and I did take some wonderful shoots and videos as well but not that much in quantity as I had a very limited time and the security there asked me to leave some amazing locations inside the Mosque as the prayer were about to start.

Some of those photography were HDR combinations that been manipulated using Adobe Photoshop CS4.
